Mugai
Ryu Iai Hyodo is a style of sword drawing founded ca 1695
by Tsuji Gettan Sukemochi (1650-1729).
The style was
introduced to the United States in the late 1960's by Shogo
Kuniba Soke of the Seishin Kai through his students. As best
as I can tell, the first person to teach Mugai Ryu in the
United States was Albert Church of South Carolina. He began
teaching in 1969. Mr. Church trained in Japan with Shogo Kuniba
Soke. Although he split off from Soke Kuniba and quit teaching
Mugai Ryu shortly after his
return to the U.S. forming his own martial art called Kamishin
Ryu.
I recently began referring to the Aikibudo Seishinkan style
as Kuniba Ha Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo in order to avoid confusion
and conflict with new organizations in the United States that
teach a different version of Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo.
Having grown
up in the NKJU and being around students of Kuniba Soke, I
was always around Mugai Ryu. Although not formally studying
the art, I picked up the basic kata. Eventually, I got more
serious about the study of Iaido and was awarded the rank
of Sandan.
