Hakko
Ryu, Junsa, Goshin Budo, Kuniba Ryu Goshindo: What do these
terms mean? Collectively, they are commonly referred to as
Jujutsu. So to answer the first question, we must first define
Jujutsu. The direct, literal translation of Jujutsu is "Gentle"
(Ju) "Art" (Jutsu) or "the art of gentleness". My first formal
Jujutsu teacher, Darrell Craig Kyoshi of the Houston
Budokan provided his students with a more precise definition
which I will paraphrase here:
"An art of gentleness, suppleness, pliancy and
flexibility that uses the body as a weapon"
Essentially, Jujutsu is a martial art, or combat art, of self
defense that employs throws, joint locks, pressure point strikes,
chokes, and striking techniques. The primary emphasis of the
techniques is in utilizing an attackers own movements and
momentum against him. Therefore, it does not require great
strength to employ the techniques,
making it possible for a person to defeat an attacker that
may be bigger or stronger. |
